Main Characteristics of Digital Audio

1. High signal-to-noise ratio

The form of digital audio recording is binary code, which only needs to judge "0" or "1" when replaying. Therefore, the noise of the recording medium has little effect on the signal-to-noise ratio of the replay signal. Analog sound recording is a continuous sound signal, which will be affected by noise such as tape in the recording and playback process. It is necessary to superimpose on the sound signal to make the sound quality worse. Although noise reduction measures have been taken in analog sound, they can not be eliminated fundamentally.

2. Low distortion

In the process of analog audio recording and playback, the non-linearity of magnetic head will lead to distortion, so it is necessary to adopt AC biasing recording and other measures, but distortion still exists. In digital audio, the head only works in saturated or non-magnetic state, which means 1 or 0. There is no linear requirement for the head.

3. Good repeatability

Digital audio equipment after repeated copying and playback, sound quality will not deteriorate. Traditional analog cassette tape recordings increase the noise recorded on the tape every time they are duplicated, resulting in a reduction of signal-to-noise ratio of about 3 dB per duplicate. The sub-tape is inferior to the mother tape, the grandson tape is inferior to the sub-tape, and the sound quality is deteriorated step by step.

4. Low shaking rate

Because of the function of time-base correction circuit, the instability of rotating system and driving system will not cause jitter in digital audio playback system, so it is unnecessary to require precise mechanical system like that in analog recording.

5. Strong adaptability

Digital audio records binary code, all kinds of processing can be carried out as numerical operations, and do not change the hardware, only use software operation, easy to control by computer, so the adaptability is strong.

6. Easy integration

Because of digitalization, VLSI is easy to use, and the whole machine is easy to debug, stable performance, high reliability, easy to mass production, can reduce costs.
